Headlight & Taillight Tinting
in Van Nuys, CA

A custom smoked finish for your headlights, taillights, and fog lights. Premium vinyl film installed by hand — fully reversible, California-aware, and done right the first time.

THE REASONS WHY

Why Van Nuys Drivers Are Smoking Their Lights

It's one of the most impactful visual modifications you can make to a vehicle — and one of the most reversible. Headlight and taillight smoking uses premium vinyl film to darken your vehicle's lenses, giving you a blacked-out, aggressive custom look without touching your paint, cutting any wires, or voiding your factory warranty.

01

The Custom Look Without the Commitment

Smoked lights transform the entire front and rear aesthetic of a vehicle. A set of smoked taillights on a blacked-out build reads as intentional, aggressive, and custom — the kind of look that turns heads in traffic without screaming "modification." And because it's film — not paint, not tinted glass, not a replacement housing — it comes off cleanly if you ever want to return to stock. No residue, no damage, no evidence it was ever there.

02

UV Protection for Your Lenses

Headlight and taillight lenses are made of polycarbonate — a plastic that degrades under prolonged UV exposure. That's what causes the yellowing, hazing, and oxidation you see on older vehicles. Our vinyl film adds a UV-blocking layer over the lens surface, slowing that degradation and keeping your lenses cleaner and clearer for longer. It's protection that pays for itself over the life of the vehicle.

03

Reduced Glare Output

Smoked film slightly reduces the intensity of light projected from your headlights and taillights — which translates to less harsh glare for other drivers, particularly from modern LED and projector setups that can be aggressively bright from the factory. Light smoke shades accomplish this without meaningfully impacting your own forward visibility or the visibility of your brake lights to cars behind you.

04

Fully Reversible

Unlike spray tint, dip, or replacement smoked housings, vinyl film can be removed professionally at any time with zero damage to the underlying lens. Selling the car? Remove it. Failed a smog check? Remove it. Changed your mind? Remove it. The factory lens underneath is untouched from day one.

Headlight Tint Film Options

We offer three smoke levels and two specialty finishes. Every option is applied using the same professional installation process — surface prep, precision cutting, hand application, heat forming around curves, and edge sealing.

Light Smoke headlight tint film example

Light Smoke

The Subtle Touch

Adds a slight darkening to your lenses that looks almost factory on most vehicles. From a distance, it's nearly imperceptible — up close, it gives the lenses a premium, tinted-glass quality. Minimal impact on light output. Best for drivers who want a clean, refined look rather than a bold statement.

Best forDaily drivers, luxury vehicles, leased cars
Medium Smoke headlight tint film exampleMost Popular

Medium Smoke

The Sweet Spot

Our most popular option. Noticeably darker than stock but not dramatically blacked-out. From the exterior, your lights have a clear intentional smoked look — from the driver's seat at night, forward visibility and brake light visibility behind you remain strong. The best balance of aesthetics and practicality.

Best forMost builds, sport compacts, trucks, SUVs
Dark Smoke headlight tint film example

Dark Smoke

The Blacked-Out Build

Maximum drama. Your lights take on a nearly black appearance when unlit — creating the full blacked-out aesthetic that aggressive builds demand. Light output is reduced more noticeably than lighter shades. Best reserved for rear lights where California law gives you more flexibility, and for show vehicles or weekend drivers.

Best forShow cars, track builds, blacked-out aesthetics, rear lights only

Gunsmoke / Stealth

The Tinted Chrome Effect

A specialty finish that creates a silvery, mirrored smoke effect over chrome or clear housings. Adds dimension and visual complexity beyond a straight dark smoke. Popular on trucks and luxury SUVs where the chrome factory trim benefits from a more aggressive treatment.

Best forChrome housings, trucks, premium SUVs

Yellow Tint

The Track & Fog Light Finish

A classic JDM-inspired yellow tint for fog lights and auxiliary lighting. Improves contrast and depth perception in fog, rain, and low-visibility conditions. Popular on sport builds and rally-inspired setups.

Best forFog lights, front auxiliary lights, track-oriented builds

What We Can Tint on Your Vehicle

We work on every light housing and lens on your vehicle. Here's what's available and what we recommend per application.

Headlights tint example

Headlights

Your primary forward lighting housings — the most impactful visual element on the front of the vehicle. We recommend light or medium smoke for headlights on daily drivers to maintain strong forward visibility. Complex projector housings, halo rings, and multi-chamber LED setups all receive the same hand-applied precision regardless of geometry.

Taillights tint example

Taillights

The most popular application. California law gives you full freedom on rear light output as long as brake lights remain visible — and smoked taillights on a clean build are one of the most effective visual modifications available. Medium or dark smoke on the rear creates a completely cohesive blacked-out look, particularly when combined with a chrome delete or color change wrap.

Fog Lights tint example

Fog Lights

Front and rear fog lights respond beautifully to both smoke and yellow tint applications. Fog light housings are typically smaller and less complex than headlights, making them a fast and affordable standalone service — or a natural addition to a full headlight and taillight package.

Third Brake Light tint example

Third Brake Light

The center high-mount stop lamp (CHMSL) on the rear of your vehicle. Matching it to your smoked taillights creates a fully unified rear end. Often overlooked but highly visible — leaving it stock when the rest of the rear is smoked creates an obvious mismatched appearance.

Turn Signals tint example

Turn Signals

Front and rear turn signal housings can be smoked independently or as part of a full package. Note: amber turn signals are required to produce a visible amber signal when lit — smoke film on amber housings still allows the amber color to show through when active. We'll advise on the right shade level to maintain proper amber visibility for your specific housing.

Side Markers tint example

Side Markers

The small amber or red side marker lights on your front and rear fenders. Matching these to your smoked headlights and taillights creates a fully detailed, intentional look across the entire vehicle — the finishing touch on a thorough build.

WHAT VAN NUYS DRIVERS NEED TO KNOW

Headlight & Taillight Tinting Laws in California

This is the section most shops skip. We don't. California Vehicle Code §26100 and related sections require that all required lighting equipment emit minimum light output and be visible at the required distances. Tinting film that reduces output below those minimums is a violation.

Headlights

Legal Requirement
Must be visible from at least 1,000 ft and adequately illuminate the road
Our Recommendation
Light smoke on most modern LED/HID headlights is well within legal visibility. Dark smoke on halogen setups can push output below legal minimums — we'll tell you honestly what shade is appropriate.

Taillights & Brake Lights

Legal Requirement
Must be clearly visible to following drivers from 1,000 ft
Our Recommendation
Medium smoke on most modern LED taillights remains within requirements. Dark smoke on older incandescent setups can reduce brake visibility to dangerous levels.

Turn Signals

Legal Requirement
Must produce a visible amber or red signal when active
Our Recommendation
Smoke film over amber housings still allows the amber color through when lit. We won't install a shade that obscures turn signal visibility.

Fog & Auxiliary Lights

Legal Requirement
Cannot interfere with required primary lighting output
Our Recommendation
Light, medium, or yellow tint are all consistently safe and legal. A great place to add visual character without legal risk.

What's Always Safe

Light smoke on headlights, taillights, fog lights, and turn signals is consistently within legal and safety requirements on modern LED-equipped vehicles. Medium smoke on taillights and fog lights is generally safe on modern vehicles.

Where We Push Back

We will not install a shade that we believe creates a genuine safety hazard or that is clearly outside California's legal requirements. If you're asking for dark smoke on halogen headlights, we'll have that conversation honestly before we touch your car.

Smog Checks

Smog checks in California test emissions — not lighting. Tinted lights will not cause a smog failure. However, a CHP officer can still issue a fix-it ticket for lighting that fails to meet output requirements during a stop.

Our Policy

Our goal is a result you love that keeps you legal and safe. We assess your specific housing and bulb type before recommending a shade — no upselling you into a ticket.

HOW WE DO IT

The Tint & Wraps Customs Headlight Tinting Process

Headlight and taillight film application is more technically demanding than flat glass tinting. Curved three-dimensional housings require hand-forming the film around complex geometry — no plotter can do this work for you. Here's how we approach every installation.

01

Surface Decontamination

Before any film touches your lenses, we clean every housing thoroughly — removing road grime, bug residue, oxidation, wax, and any other contaminant from the lens surface. Film applied over a contaminated lens will lift, bubble, and fail prematurely. A clean lens is the foundation of a lasting installation.

02

Precision Pattern Cutting

Using your vehicle's year, make, and model, we cut each piece of film to match your specific housing geometry as closely as possible before application. This reduces the amount of hand-stretching required during application and minimizes waste — giving us clean, accurate starting pieces for every housing.

03

Hand Application & Heat Forming

This is where skill separates a professional installation from a DIY attempt. Each piece of film is applied wet to the lens surface and then carefully heat-formed around the curves, edges, and contours of your specific housing using heat guns. The heat makes the film pliable — allowing it to conform to three-dimensional surfaces without creasing, folding, or creating tension lines.

04

Edge Sealing

Once the film is formed and positioned, every edge is sealed down with precision. Unsealed edges are the primary failure point on light tinting — they lift in car washes, catch on debris, and allow moisture intrusion that causes hazing under the film. We seal every edge completely before the vehicle leaves the bay.

05

Final Inspection

We check every housing for bubbles, tension lines, unsealed edges, and any inclusion or imperfection before calling the job complete. We also verify that all lights function correctly with the film applied — headlights, taillights, brake lights, and turn signals all get a function check before your keys go back in your hand.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does headlight and taillight tinting cost in Van Nuys?+

Pricing depends on the number of housings being tinted, the complexity of your specific housing geometry, and the film shade selected. Simpler housings on standard vehicles cost less than complex multi-chamber projector or full-width LED setups. Call us at (747) 295-7683 or submit a quote request with your year, make, and model and we'll give you an exact number.

How long does the installation take?+

Most full headlight and taillight packages — all four primary housings — are completed in one to two hours. Adding fog lights, third brake light, side markers, and turn signals adds time. We'll give you an accurate time estimate when you book based on your specific vehicle and the scope of the job.

Is headlight tinting legal in California?+

It depends on the shade and your specific vehicle's lighting output. Light and medium smoke on modern LED-equipped vehicles is generally within California's legal requirements. Dark smoke on headlights — particularly halogen setups — can reduce output below legal minimums. We assess your specific housing before recommending a shade and will not install a level we believe creates a legal or safety issue. See our California Law section above for full details.

Will smoked taillights pass a smog check?+

Smog checks in California do not test taillight output or tinting — they test emissions. Taillight tinting will not cause a smog check failure. However, a CHP officer can issue a fix-it ticket for lighting that fails to meet output requirements during a traffic stop.

How long does headlight tint film last?+

With proper care, professional vinyl headlight film lasts three to five years on most vehicles. Exposure to the elements, frequency of car washes, and parking conditions all affect longevity. Vehicles parked outdoors in direct sun daily will see shorter film life than garage-kept vehicles. We use premium vinyl film from reputable manufacturers — not cheap DIY-grade material.

Can the film be removed if I change my mind?+

Yes — and this is one of the primary advantages of film over spray tint or replacement housings. Professional removal leaves the underlying lens completely undamaged and residue-free. If you're selling the car, returning a lease, or simply want to go back to stock, we offer full removal service.

Will tinted headlights affect my forward visibility at night?+

Light smoke has minimal impact on forward visibility on modern LED and HID setups, which produce significantly more output than older halogen bulbs. Medium smoke is noticeable at night on lower-output setups. We'll be honest with you about what shade makes sense for your specific headlights and how you use the car.

Can I run my car through an automatic car wash after getting my lights tinted?+

Wait at least 48 hours after installation before any car wash. After the film has fully cured, touchless car washes are fine. High-pressure brush washes can catch film edges over time and are best avoided if you want to maximize the life of your installation. Hand washing is always the safest option.

Do you tint lights on all vehicle types?+

Yes. We work on sedans, coupes, trucks, SUVs, and performance vehicles. Complex housings — large LED arrays, multi-chamber projectors, full-width taillight bars — all receive the same hand-application process. Some very complex housings take longer and may be priced accordingly.

Can I get just the taillights done without the headlights?+

Absolutely. Taillights only, headlights only, fog lights only, or any combination — we work with whatever scope makes sense for your build and your budget. Many customers start with taillights and come back for the rest of the package once they see how it looks.
