Why Van Nuys Drivers Are Smoking Their Lights
It's one of the most impactful visual modifications you can make to a vehicle — and one of the most reversible. Headlight and taillight smoking uses premium vinyl film to darken your vehicle's lenses, giving you a blacked-out, aggressive custom look without touching your paint, cutting any wires, or voiding your factory warranty.
The Custom Look Without the Commitment
Smoked lights transform the entire front and rear aesthetic of a vehicle. A set of smoked taillights on a blacked-out build reads as intentional, aggressive, and custom — the kind of look that turns heads in traffic without screaming "modification." And because it's film — not paint, not tinted glass, not a replacement housing — it comes off cleanly if you ever want to return to stock. No residue, no damage, no evidence it was ever there.
UV Protection for Your Lenses
Headlight and taillight lenses are made of polycarbonate — a plastic that degrades under prolonged UV exposure. That's what causes the yellowing, hazing, and oxidation you see on older vehicles. Our vinyl film adds a UV-blocking layer over the lens surface, slowing that degradation and keeping your lenses cleaner and clearer for longer. It's protection that pays for itself over the life of the vehicle.
Reduced Glare Output
Smoked film slightly reduces the intensity of light projected from your headlights and taillights — which translates to less harsh glare for other drivers, particularly from modern LED and projector setups that can be aggressively bright from the factory. Light smoke shades accomplish this without meaningfully impacting your own forward visibility or the visibility of your brake lights to cars behind you.
Fully Reversible
Unlike spray tint, dip, or replacement smoked housings, vinyl film can be removed professionally at any time with zero damage to the underlying lens. Selling the car? Remove it. Failed a smog check? Remove it. Changed your mind? Remove it. The factory lens underneath is untouched from day one.

We work on every light housing and lens on your vehicle. Here's what's available and what we recommend per application.
Headlight & Taillight Tinting Laws in California
This is the section most shops skip. We don't. California Vehicle Code §26100 and related sections require that all required lighting equipment emit minimum light output and be visible at the required distances. Tinting film that reduces output below those minimums is a violation.

What's Always Safe
Light smoke on headlights, taillights, fog lights, and turn signals is consistently within legal and safety requirements on modern LED-equipped vehicles. Medium smoke on taillights and fog lights is generally safe on modern vehicles.
Where We Push Back
We will not install a shade that we believe creates a genuine safety hazard or that is clearly outside California's legal requirements. If you're asking for dark smoke on halogen headlights, we'll have that conversation honestly before we touch your car.
Smog Checks
Smog checks in California test emissions — not lighting. Tinted lights will not cause a smog failure. However, a CHP officer can still issue a fix-it ticket for lighting that fails to meet output requirements during a stop.
Our Policy
Our goal is a result you love that keeps you legal and safe. We assess your specific housing and bulb type before recommending a shade — no upselling you into a ticket.

Headlight and taillight film application is more technically demanding than flat glass tinting. Curved three-dimensional housings require hand-forming the film around complex geometry — no plotter can do this work for you. Here's how we approach every installation.
Surface Decontamination
Before any film touches your lenses, we clean every housing thoroughly — removing road grime, bug residue, oxidation, wax, and any other contaminant from the lens surface. Film applied over a contaminated lens will lift, bubble, and fail prematurely. A clean lens is the foundation of a lasting installation.
Precision Pattern Cutting
Using your vehicle's year, make, and model, we cut each piece of film to match your specific housing geometry as closely as possible before application. This reduces the amount of hand-stretching required during application and minimizes waste — giving us clean, accurate starting pieces for every housing.
Hand Application & Heat Forming
This is where skill separates a professional installation from a DIY attempt. Each piece of film is applied wet to the lens surface and then carefully heat-formed around the curves, edges, and contours of your specific housing using heat guns. The heat makes the film pliable — allowing it to conform to three-dimensional surfaces without creasing, folding, or creating tension lines.
Edge Sealing
Once the film is formed and positioned, every edge is sealed down with precision. Unsealed edges are the primary failure point on light tinting — they lift in car washes, catch on debris, and allow moisture intrusion that causes hazing under the film. We seal every edge completely before the vehicle leaves the bay.
Final Inspection
We check every housing for bubbles, tension lines, unsealed edges, and any inclusion or imperfection before calling the job complete. We also verify that all lights function correctly with the film applied — headlights, taillights, brake lights, and turn signals all get a function check before your keys go back in your hand.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does headlight and taillight tinting cost in Van Nuys?+
Pricing depends on the number of housings being tinted, the complexity of your specific housing geometry, and the film shade selected. Simpler housings on standard vehicles cost less than complex multi-chamber projector or full-width LED setups. Call us at (747) 295-7683 or submit a quote request with your year, make, and model and we'll give you an exact number.
How long does the installation take?+
Most full headlight and taillight packages — all four primary housings — are completed in one to two hours. Adding fog lights, third brake light, side markers, and turn signals adds time. We'll give you an accurate time estimate when you book based on your specific vehicle and the scope of the job.
Is headlight tinting legal in California?+
It depends on the shade and your specific vehicle's lighting output. Light and medium smoke on modern LED-equipped vehicles is generally within California's legal requirements. Dark smoke on headlights — particularly halogen setups — can reduce output below legal minimums. We assess your specific housing before recommending a shade and will not install a level we believe creates a legal or safety issue. See our California Law section above for full details.
Will smoked taillights pass a smog check?+
Smog checks in California do not test taillight output or tinting — they test emissions. Taillight tinting will not cause a smog check failure. However, a CHP officer can issue a fix-it ticket for lighting that fails to meet output requirements during a traffic stop.
How long does headlight tint film last?+
With proper care, professional vinyl headlight film lasts three to five years on most vehicles. Exposure to the elements, frequency of car washes, and parking conditions all affect longevity. Vehicles parked outdoors in direct sun daily will see shorter film life than garage-kept vehicles. We use premium vinyl film from reputable manufacturers — not cheap DIY-grade material.
Can the film be removed if I change my mind?+
Yes — and this is one of the primary advantages of film over spray tint or replacement housings. Professional removal leaves the underlying lens completely undamaged and residue-free. If you're selling the car, returning a lease, or simply want to go back to stock, we offer full removal service.
Will tinted headlights affect my forward visibility at night?+
Light smoke has minimal impact on forward visibility on modern LED and HID setups, which produce significantly more output than older halogen bulbs. Medium smoke is noticeable at night on lower-output setups. We'll be honest with you about what shade makes sense for your specific headlights and how you use the car.
Can I run my car through an automatic car wash after getting my lights tinted?+
Wait at least 48 hours after installation before any car wash. After the film has fully cured, touchless car washes are fine. High-pressure brush washes can catch film edges over time and are best avoided if you want to maximize the life of your installation. Hand washing is always the safest option.
Do you tint lights on all vehicle types?+
Yes. We work on sedans, coupes, trucks, SUVs, and performance vehicles. Complex housings — large LED arrays, multi-chamber projectors, full-width taillight bars — all receive the same hand-application process. Some very complex housings take longer and may be priced accordingly.
Can I get just the taillights done without the headlights?+
Absolutely. Taillights only, headlights only, fog lights only, or any combination — we work with whatever scope makes sense for your build and your budget. Many customers start with taillights and come back for the rest of the package once they see how it looks.
